Self Esteem: Why It’s Important and How to Get It ~Carol Finlayson~
Having self esteem should not be taken for granted, even though anybody can have it and it doesn’t cost a penny. The thing about self esteem is that you have to achieve it yourself, nobody else can do it for you. In this day in age, with all the pressures and pitfalls one encounters in their lives, many people lose hope and confidence in themselves. Once this downward spiral has begun, it can be very hard to get back to a state of happiness, but all is not lost. At any point in your life, you can make a positive change to find your self esteem again, and keep it for good.
How to know when you’ve lost your self esteem
When you have self esteem, you will be confident in yourself, feel in control of your life, and be happy with the way you perform at the workplace and in social situations. It’s a feeling of empowerment that comes when things go the way you want them to in your life, and you know you have the ability to achieve things yourself.
Unfortunately, there are many people in this world who do not feel like this. Suffering from low self esteem is not something that happens overnight, it somehow creeps up on a person and over time becomes more of a problem. Eventually one day that person is going to realize that they are unhappy, and are lacking self esteem to help them become happy again. The important step at this junction is to realize the problem and not ignore it. Putting it off, and saying things like, “It’s my work that’s getting me down, it will get better eventually,” or, “I just need to find someone to build a relationship with and then I’ll be happy,” will only make the recovery process longer. If you really want to be happy again, you need to act now.
Why having self esteem is important
Self esteem is feeling good about yourself, and everyone has the right to feel good about themselves. When you don’t feel good on the inside, you project a negative feeling to other people, which can further exacerbate the problem. Psychologists have carried out vast amounts of research into the feelings of self control and self esteem, and the results showed that people with high self esteem can perform tasks better and are much better equipped to fight psychological problems that may affect them. Many people have succumbed to addiction through having low self esteem, and working to get back self esteem is one method for how to help an alcoholic family member or relative who wants to quit drinking. In fact, many psychological problems and mental health issues can be a result of having low self esteem. So high self esteem is important for a healthy body and mind, and can be achieved if you really want it.
How to get your self esteem back
If you are suffering from low self esteem then you have already completed the first step in getting it back, which is realizing you don’t have it! Now the hard work begins, because you need to identify all the things that contribute to you having low self esteem. Things that make you feel bad about yourself, whether it’s sometime to do with your appearance, your love life, your career, your level of fitness, or a whole plethora of other reasons. Think hard and try to identify everything that is stopping you from having the level of self esteem you deserve. Once you have done this, a big change has to be made to change the things that are causing unhappiness in your life. There are a variety of methods to help you do this, like creating a belief board. A belief board is a collection of image put in a place you will regularly see it, like at work or near the television, and these images give a visual message about what you want to change. Think of it as a motivator, and by putting images of what you want to achieve as time progresses it will help you achieve those goals.
There are many different ways you can recover your self esteem and many people find that meditation and yoga work for them. It really is about finding the way that works for you and sticking with it, having the power to really want it.
