Accepting Ourselves – the path to lasting friendships
Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Sometimes our insecurities can cause us to react to people and situations in an overly sensitive and/or needy manner. An intense desire to be accepted by our peers, colleagues, and loved ones, can cause us to suppress our values, opinions, and beliefs in order to fit in.
However, even if we achieve acceptance, we may nonetheless feel vulnerable because our true identity has been silenced. We may also discover that the interpersonal connections we make in this manner are weak and easily broken.
Being ourselves can help us attract new friends and strengthen the relationships we already share with our loved ones.
Our sensitivity will likely be eased when we discover that the people who care about us appreciate us for who we are.
While the need to belong can drive us to seek out a variety of new companions, it is only in being ourselves that we can connect with the people who will eventually become treasured friends.
Efforts to hide our true natures almost always backfire because living outside of our value systems proves to be a frustrating and stressful experience.
When were ourselves, we are naturally at ease, and others are drawn to our innate confidence and pleasant demeanor. Our honesty can also prove attractive—when we express our sincere thoughts and feelings, new friends understand that we are someone they can trust and confide in on a deeper level.
You’ll find yourself surrounded by people who enjoy your natural kindness and charm when you let your inner self shine.
